[edit] Blurb

Windhorse premiered at the 1998 Santa Barbara Film Festival to great acclaim, sweeping the Jury Awards for Best U.S Feature and Best Director. It quickly became an international festival hit, winning Audience Awards at the Florida International Film Festival and at the Washington, D.C. International Film Festival. It was invited to the Toronto, Rotterdam, Tokyo, Melbourne, Sydney, Hawaii and Aspen Film Festivals. It was honored with screenings at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in London and the Telluride Mountain Film Festival, where it won Best of the Fest. Finally, it won the Premio Alp/Cervino Mountain Film Festival, honoring it as the worldwide outstanding mountain film of the year.

The attention it garnered became a matter of considerable concern for the Chinese government. Beijing responded aggressively to thwart screenings of the film at the Washington, D.C. International Film Festival, as reported in the New York Times and Washington Post. The Hawaii International Film Festival, fearing retaliation from the Chinese government, withdrew the film's nomination for its highest award, prompting a widely publicized controversy, as reported in Indiewire and the Honolulu dailies.[1]
