"What Dreams May Come" asks the audience to embrace certain Eastern concepts, such as life after death, reincarnation, and some New Age ideas, such as communication with the dead through automatic writing (e.g., the scene where Christy telepathically tells his wife to write down "I still exist"). Curiously enough, the characters are upper class and Christian. Historically, some mystical Jewish, Christian and Muslim sects have embraced Eastern ideas. Even traditional religions update their doctrinal beliefs now and then, such as the elimination of limbo by the Catholic Church recently. The heavens of "What Dreams May Come" are quite modern. The beings there don't necessarily have wings, though they can certainly levitate. And they work too. The son Ian works as a missionary or sort, helping the newly-arrived souls. The daughter Marie works with animals, which makes you wonder if indeed they have souls and the process of soul evolution for all kinds of beings. Individualism, which is highly prized in American culture, is expressed in the depiction of heaven and hell here.[1]
