[edit] View from Nowhere
The Violence/Dharma ratio is very high here. Also the presentation of Buddhist Dharma, such as it is, is a lower vehicle teaching. Relics, praying to Buddha, worshiping Buddha as if he were some kind of God. The dependence on relics as external power objects. The clearly stated belief that the high Buddhist civilization of the Chinese Tang Dynasty can be attributed to ownership of the the concentrated essence of what was left of Sakyamuni after his cremation. That is what I mean by "lower vehicle".
One virtue of the film was the portrayal of a still, quiet, and peaceful monk traveling with the motley band of warriors in the caravan along the silk road. He showed that peace of mind is a state of mind, and he remains in that state as extraordinary violence swirls all around. This might be a reason to see the film if one is disposed towards this kind of action flick anyway.
