[edit] Blurb
'Spirited Away is the story of Chihiro, a very angry little girl, as Mr. Miyazaki describes her, who is forced to work for Shinto spirits in an otherworldly bathhouse to rescue her parents, who have been turned into pigs.
The spirits are amazingly varied, ranging from wispy sprites to a spectacularly incontinent Stink God. Some of the Japanese gods take human shape, Mr. Miyazaki, 61, said through an interpreter last week at the Toronto International Film Festival. But I asked them to take a break in this movie and didn't give them an opportunity to grace the screen. Instead, I chose to give shape to those gods that tend to remain invisible, so I guess I had to make them up. I knew I was risking their wrath by giving shape to the well god, the storage-house god and the others. But I think my gods are more realistic than the traditional ones.[1]
