One day in 1995, the master of a remote Buddhist monastery in Tibet summoned a young monk named Gyalten Rinpoche.

You are to embark on a pilgrimage, he told Rinpoche. You will walk from Tibet through Nepal and into India. From there you will travel to the West to teach Buddhism.

What the master asked of Rinpoche was extraordinary. It was a trek of 1,000 miles, alone and on foot. To reach Nepal, he would have to risk his life traversing the icy Himalayas. Rinpoche replied, “Yes, of course. I will try my best.” He left three days later.
